Recycling Art Competition Success at Llanharan School
March 3, 2008
Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council’s Streetcare Team went along to Llanharan Primary School this week to judge an art competition based on their successful recycling initiatives. The older children were asked to design a special poster highlighting the importance of recycling to be printed and displayed in schools throughout the county borough. The younger pupils entered a colouring competition to brighten up an image of the council’s recycling champion mascot Rhys Cycle.
Llanharan Primary School held a Recycling Week to help promote ways of saving the environment in a way which not only educated the children but encouraged them to spread the importance of recycling to their families at home.
The competition marked the climax to a busy week of “green” theme events led by acting headteacher Bethan Price.
An assembly hall full of pupils attended the judging of the competition, which was undertaken by the Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf Cllr Jane Ward, assisted by Ward Member for Llanharan Cllr Geraint Hopkins.
Also present was Chair of Governors at the school Anne Brett and the Council’s Director of Streetcare Services Nigel Wheeler.
Seven-year-old Shauna Garvie won the Year One and Two category for colouring a picture of Rhys Cycle. Sarah Grant, aged nine, came first in Year Three and Four for designing a recycling poster, while Shannon Keeble, aged 11, won the overall Year Five and Six category and will have her design reprinted.
